1 Now, the serpent was more prudent than all the beasts of the field which YHWH Elohim had made. 2 He said to the wife, “Elohim also really said you shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” 3 The wife said to the serpent, “We can eat the fruit of the trees of the garden, but the fruit of the tree in the center of the garden, Elohim has said, ‘You will not eat it, nor will you grab it lest you die.’” 4 The serpent said to the wife, “Surely not, ‘you will die’ since Elohim knows that on the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like the elohim, knowing good and bad.” 5 So then, when the wife saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was desirable to the eyes, and a pleasureful tree to make one wise, she took its fruit and ate, and she gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 6 And the pair’s eyes were observant and they knew that they were naked. 7 So they sewed together fig tree leaves and made coverings for themselves. 8 They heard the sound of YHWH Elohim strolling in the garden, in the breeze of the day and withdrew themselves, the human and his wife, amongst the trees of the garden from the face of YHWH Elohim. 9 And YHWH Elohim called to the human and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 So he said, “I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked and hid myself.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you to not eat from?” 12 And the human said, “The wife whom you gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree and I ate.” 13 And YHWH Elohim said to the wife, “Is this what you have done?” 14 And the wife said, “The serpent deceived me and I ate.” 15 So YHWH Elohim said to the serpent, “because you have done this you are cursed more than all the beasts, more than all living things in the field. You shall slither on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life. 16 And I will put a state of hostility between you and the wife, and between your seed and between her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” 17 To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain and pregnancy; you shall birth children in pain. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” 18 And to Adam he said, “Because you listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree I commanded you, ‘you shall not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed because of you, and in pain you shall eat from it all the days of your life, and it will spring forth thorns and thistles, and you shall eat the herbs of the field, by the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken, for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” 19 The human called his wife’s name Life, because she was the mother of all alive.
20 YHWH Elohim made tunics of skin for the human and his wife and clothed them. 21 YHWH Elohim said, “Behold, the human has become like one of us, knowing good and bad. Now, lest he reaches out his hand and takes and eats from the Tree of Life also and lives forever —“ 22 So YHWH Elohim sent him out of the garden in Eden to serve the ground which he had been taken from. 23 So he drove out the human and stationed east of the garden in Eden cherubs and a flaming sword to turn and guard the way to the Tree of Life.
